The Beeple Collection: It Was Us
Vidimus. Venimus. Vicimus.
It was an all-or-nothing attempt over the weekend of December 11th, 2020. During a Nifty Gateway auction, we acquired the complete set of 20 1/1 artworks in the Beeple Everydays: The 2020 Collection, created by the legendary artist Beeple.
More than 14 hours of bidding over two nights (Singapore time). With the average price at ~$109,000, bidding on every piece was a battle. We did in two days what most NFT aficionados or funds would do in two years.
We had a game plan. We were driven. And we had a mad vision for what comes next.
Who are we? We are Metapurse.
The Metapurse Viewpoint
NFTs are the center of a renaissance - of finance, technology, creativity, collaboration, and culture itself.
As Metapurse, we find ourselves in a unique position: we have the vantage point, the means, and the right amount of frontier madness to capture the zeitgeist of this NFT revolution. Part crypto/NFT impact investment fund and part production company, Metapurse is financed by Metakovan and stewarded by Twobadour.
Since inception, we have sought to acquire culturally significant NFTs that have earned a moment in history - from the largest single estate in Decentraland to genesis NFTs like the F1 Delta Time 1-1-1 and the first ever programmable layered art, First Supper.
This viewpoint might explain acquiring the Beeple 20 collection. Up to a point.
There is the question of why. Why Beeple? Why plan for weeks and endure nerve-wracking bidding? Why spend over $2.2 million? Why acquire the entire first-edition collection and not seven, or 15 of the 20?
First, we feel strongly that Beeple’s entry into the crypto art world is an accelerant for the entire NFT ecosystem. It isn’t just the numbers alone, though they are massive: consider Beeple’s 1.7 million Instagram followers or the drop’s record-breaking primary sales of $3.5 million. It is also Beeple’s philosophy of creating for the joy of it - 13 years of everydays - that struck a powerful chord in us.
Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, this event - even the acquisition phase - will surely bring more artists, creatives, collectors, and investors of all types into the ecosystem.
That’s right. The acquisition is phase one.
On The Horizon
Up next is a project and event that flips the art world status quo on its head. And the best part of this journey is that we are not alone in it. NFT newsmakers and commentators, technologists and artists - like Beeple, yes - are part of this conversation.
You can join us too, as we redefine art ownership and reimagine how people experience art itself. This is the future of cryptoart: a collective conversation as we journey somewhere entirely new, together.
Stay tuned and subscribe to our newsletter. We will be making some big announcements soon.
I am writing a book that takes on the subject of how NFTs can truly change the artworld and would like permission to quote Metakovan and Twobadour. Who do I contact please?
